My mother lives with us and has accidents now and again, what can I do to help her?

My mum is 72 and very frail so she lives with me and my family so I can help her. Everyone is ok for her to be here but I am so embarrassed when she has wetting accidents and my children or friends step in the puddle. Is there anything I can do to help mum as I would feel terrible if I had to put her in a home.

Our expert answered:

One of the main reasons elderly people are admitted into Aged Care facilities is because of urinary and faecal incontinence, as it impacts on all aspects of life – psychologically, emotionally, financially, socially and work for family members and the person themselves.

You need to have your mother assessed to have a continence program developed. A Continence Advisor is the best person to do this for you. You can find a local Continence Advisor by enquiring at your local Public Hospital if they have a Continence Clinic or find a private Advisor in the Community by calling the Continence Foundation on freecall 1800 33 00 66.

The Continence Advisor will not only be able to develop a program specifically to meet your mothers needs in order to manage or treat the Urinary Incontinence, but they will also be able to advise if she is eligible for any State or Federal Subsidy Schemes (depending on the State you reside), along with trialling sample continence aids to find the best one.
