I have noticed a heavy dragging sensation in my genital area and can’t seem to work out why?
I am 63 years old and have noticed a heavy dragging sensation in my genital area and can’t seem to work out why; I have also been wetting myself a lot and find I can’t get to the toilet on time. I have had a urine test but don’t have any infections. This is very embarrassing and my husband gets annoyed with me going to bed late or earlier than him every night as I don’t want to get romantic with him. I have had 5 children who were all large babies 10-12lb and the labours were between 10-22 hours. Is there anything I can do or does it mean that I am getting old and should expect it?
Our expert answered:
There are absolutely things that you can do to address and minimise your bladder weakness and no reason to sit by and live with it.
Firstly, you haven’t mentioned if you have spoken about your concerns with a doctor, apart from the urine test. It sounds like you may have a prolapse which is a protrusion or slippage of an organ or tissue from its normal location. This is usually due to weak pelvic floor muscles. You should see your doctor for a referral to a gynecologist for the prolapse as they may be able to suggest treatment and doing pelvic floor exercises will help.
It also sounds like you may have urge incontinence, which is usually caused by poor bladder habits.
For information on how to treat your incontinence the Depend website has lots of information on incontinence treatments, which include information on pelvic floor exercises and bladder training. Visit Incontinence treatment
Remember – it is no different to what everyone should do every day to have good bladder health, and doesn’t take any time out of your day if it is incorporated into everyday life, just like good and healthy nutrition.
