I suffer from fluid retention and some incontinence, I urinate about 4 - 6 times a day and will often go 6 - 8 times at night. why?

I drink over 3 liters of water a day, and may drink 2-3 glasses of water at night when I get up, I am thirsty a lot [I have had my sugar checked, its good]. I do not smoke, drink alcohol, tea, coffee, coke or soft drinks. I do sometimes have weak cordials, and a glass or two of milk a day.

When I go to town or out, I have some control over my bladder, but as soon as I walk in the front door, [most times] I do not make it to the loo.

I have had my kidneys checked with scans, coloured dye, xrays [I am unsure what the proceedures were called], and an operation where a camera is used to check the inside of my bladder. The doctor suggested ural drinks and natural products for cystitis, what else do you suggest and what other information is available? I live on an outback property and I am busy most of the time. I do not get to town much and my problem is more a nuisance than serious.

Our expert answered:

Dear Sue,

Incontinence has a wide variety of causes including giving birth to children, going through menopause, other health conditions and aging. It is a common condition that effects around 1 in 3 women over 35. One way to help improve the problem is by doing pelvic floor exercises which can help strengthen your muscles so that you are better able to hold the urine in.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things by keeping your fluid levels up and avoiding diuretics such as coffee and tea. Eating foods with high levels of salt can also cause fluid retention.

Unfortunately it is difficult to diagnose your exact problem and it is best to visit your GP. You may like to call the continence foundation of Australia to speak directly to continence nurse over the phone for advice, freecall 1800330066

In the meantime, Poise has a great range of pads and liners that are specially designed for bladder weakness so they are a lot more absorbent than regular sanitary pads or liners. You can explore more about Poise at www.poise.com.au and even request a free sample.
