I care for my mum and she sometimes looses control of bowel and bladder I suggested to look at her diet was I right in advising her?
she is 93 and very active and goes out to bingo and I worry the smell will be picked up she uses sanitary products.
Our expert answered:
The loss of control is most likely related to her pelvic floor muscles weakening with age. Some people reduce their water intake or fibre intake to try and manage the problem, however, this can in fact make the problem worse. It is important that your mum keeps up her fluid intake and fibre intake as constipation can often place increased pressure on her pelvic floor muscles leading to a greater loss of control.
Products like Poise and Depend have special super absorbent particles that can help to remove odour. Instead of using sanitary products, your mum might like to try products that are specially designed for this condition.
Both Poise and Depend offer free samples from their website to try and the incontinence products are readily available from supermarkets and pharmacies.
